Wondering why coaches are viewing your profile, searching you, but not responding to your message? Don’t get discouraged! Just because you haven’t heard from a college coach doesn’t mean they don’t want to talk to you!

Here’s the truth.

NCAA rules control when college coaches can call, text, or email high school athletes. Athletes can reach out to coaches at any time, but coaches must wait for specific calendar dates to reply, depending on the sport and division level. You can check detailed official calendars through the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Insider Recruiting Tip: College coaches begin building their recruiting classes early—researching athletes online, attending events, camp invitations, and connecting with your coaches. Having a strong online profile helps athletes get on coaches’ radars and evaluated early in the recruiting process. Create your free profile here!

Student-Athlete vs. Coach Communication

  • Athlete-initiated contact: You can call, email, or message a coach at any time.
  • Coach-initiated contact: Coaches must follow strict start dates before they can call, text, or direct message you back. These vary based on division and graduation year.
  • Public vs. Private: Coaches can only use private messages (texts, emails, DMs). They cannot post on your public social media pages.

Rules by Division Level

  • Division 1 (D1): Most sports require coaches to wait until June 15 after your sophomore year (or September 1 of your junior year for some sports) before they can send texts, emails, or make phone calls.
  • Division 2 (D2): Coaches can send electronic communication and athletic info starting your freshman year, but in-person off-campus contact has tighter limits.
  • Division 3 (D3): There are no timing limits. Coaches can call, text, or email you at any time during your high school years.

Special Calendar Periods

  • Contact Period: Coaches can talk to you in person, watch you play, and call you freely.
  • Evaluation Period: Coaches can watch you play or visit your school, but face-to-face chats outside the college campus are banned.
  • Dead Period: No in-person contact or campus visits are allowed, but phone calls and emails are still permitted.
