You put in the work. You made the plays. Now it’s time to get your highlights in front of college coaches.
Whether you’re scoring goals, hitting home runs, making tackles, or breaking personal records, your highlight video is one of the best ways to show college coaches what you can bring to their program.
But having a great highlight reel saved on your phone isn’t enough. You need a way to share it.
That’s where YouTube comes in.
Uploading your highlights to YouTube gives you a shareable video link you can send to college coaches and include in your recruiting communications. And the best part? You don’t need to be a content creator or editing expert to make it happen.
Here’s how to get your highlights uploaded and ready to share.
Step 1: Get Your Highlight Video Ready
Before opening YouTube, make sure your highlight video is ready to go.
Your video should showcase your strongest plays, not just every clip you’ve collected throughout the season.
A few quick tips:
- Lead with your best plays. Give coaches a reason to keep watching.
- Make yourself easy to identify. Use a circle, arrow, or brief pause before plays when needed.
- Keep it focused. Aim for a few minutes of your strongest footage rather than a long compilation.
- Include the basics. Your name, graduation year, position, and jersey number help coaches identify you.
- Check your video quality. Make sure coaches can clearly see the action.
Pro tip: You don’t need fancy transitions or dramatic music. Clear footage and strong plays matter more than special effects.
Once your video is saved to your phone or computer, you’re ready to upload.
Step 2: Open YouTube and Sign In
Head to YouTube or open the YouTube app on your phone.
Sign in with your Google account. If you haven’t created a YouTube channel yet, YouTube may prompt you to set one up before uploading.
Choose a channel name that’s appropriate for recruiting. Your real name or a simple variation of it is a great place to start.
Keep it professional. This is something you may eventually share with college coaches!
Step 3: Upload Your Highlight Video
You can upload directly from your phone or computer. Here’s how to do both.
Uploading from Your Phone
- Open the YouTube app on your iPhone or Android device.
- Tap the Create (+) button.
- Select Video.
- Choose your highlight video from your device.
- Tap Next.
- Add your video title and any requested details.
- Follow the remaining prompts to select your audience and visibility settings.
- Finish uploading your video.
Important: If your video is three minutes or less and is square or vertical, YouTube will upload it as a Short. For a traditional recruiting highlight video, a horizontal 16:9 format is usually a better choice.
Uploading from Your Computer
- Go to YouTube Studio.
- Sign in to your YouTube account.
- Click Create in the upper-right corner.
- Select Upload videos.
- Choose your highlight video file.
- Enter your title, description, and other video details.
- Select the appropriate audience setting.
- Continue through YouTube’s checks and visibility options.
- Save or publish your video.
YouTube may need additional time to process higher-quality versions of your video, so don’t panic if HD playback isn’t immediately available.
Step 4: Give Your Video a Coach-Friendly Title
Your video title should tell college coaches exactly who they’re watching.
Skip vague titles like “My Soccer Highlights 🔥🔥” or “Best Plays Ever.”
Instead, use something clear and searchable.
Example:
Sarah Smith | Class of 2028 | Soccer Midfielder | 2026 Fall Highlights
A strong title includes your name, graduation year, sport, position, and season when relevant.
Remember: You’re not trying to go viral. You’re trying to make it easy for a coach to evaluate you.
Step 5: Add a Helpful Description
Your description is another opportunity to give coaches useful context.
Keep it short, organized, and professional.
Example description:
Sarah Smith | Class of 2028
Sport: Women’s Soccer
Position: Midfielder
Jersey Number: #8
Club Team: Example FC
Graduation Year: 2028

Include information you’re comfortable sharing publicly. Avoid posting your personal phone number, home address, or other sensitive information in your video description.
Step 6: Choose the Right Privacy Settings
Before finishing your upload, YouTube will ask who should be able to watch your video.
Here’s what the options mean:
- Public: Anyone can watch your video, and it may appear in YouTube search results.
- Unlisted: Anyone with your video link can watch, but it generally won’t appear in YouTube search results.
- Private: Only you and people you specifically authorize can view it.
Our recommendation: Public or Unlisted are usually the most practical options for recruiting.
Public can make your video easier to discover. Unlisted lets you share the video directly with coaches without making it broadly searchable.
Avoid choosing Private if your goal is to send a regular watchable link to coaches.
YouTube will also ask whether your video is Made for Kids. This setting refers to whether the content is directed toward children, not simply whether the athlete in the video is under 18. Most standard high school recruiting highlight videos intended for coaches are not specifically made for children, but select the setting that accurately describes your content.
One more thing: YouTube accounts belonging to creators ages 13–17 default to Private visibility, so double-check your selection before sharing.
Step 7: Publish and Test Your Link
You’re almost there!
Once your video has finished uploading:
- Open your video on YouTube.
- Select Share.
- Tap or click Copy link.
- Open the link in a private browsing window or on another device.
- Make sure the video plays correctly.
This last step matters more than you might think.
The last thing you want is to send a college coach a link they can’t open.
Check that your footage is clear, the title is correct, and your visibility settings allow the intended viewers to watch.
Step 8: Put Your Highlights to Work
Your highlight video is uploaded. Now what?
Don’t let it sit on YouTube collecting digital dust.
Start using it as part of your recruiting strategy.
You can share your video link in emails to college coaches, include it in recruiting questionnaires when requested, and add it to your athlete recruiting materials.
And don’t forget your CaptainU profile!
Keep your CaptainU profile updated with your athletic information, recruiting details, and highlight footage. Use your YouTube link wherever the platform provides an appropriate place to share video content.
Your highlight video helps coaches see what you can do. Your recruiting profile helps provide the bigger picture of who you are as an athlete.
